ECOnvertible: H&M x Issey Miyake
A Merchandising Case Study

Can fast fashion be sustainable?
In the fall of 2023, I sought to explore this question and rethink how we buy clothing online. My mission? To craft a case study for the Fashion Scholarship Fund competition, tackling textile waste generated by online customer returns at fast-fashion powerhouse H&M. The challenge called for innovative ideas, such as embedding Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) goals into a fashion assortment.
In keeping with H&M's collaborative heritage, I responded with a capsule collection of modular clothing in partnership with Issey Miyake, calling on the designer's pioneering approach to adaptable garment construction. Each capsule piece was designed to be versatile and transformable, empowering wearers to reimagine their wardrobes without permanent alterations.

ASSORTMENT

Modeled after the classic Issey Miyake pleating technique, ECOnvertible utilizes drawstrings to adjust hemlines and allow pieces to be added to or subtracted from one another. The capsule includes one top, one skirt, one pair of pants and sleeve accessories that can be mixed, matched, and adjusted for a variety of looks, making it a virtually complete wardrobe.

ECOnvertible seamlessly yields two additional no-sew pieces by simply tying drawstring ends together to create a dress and jumpsuit which still allow for functional size and length adjustments, and effortless, organic silhouettes. Sleeves are also attached in this way.
